THE MALAYAN TIGER
The Ninth Sub-specie of Tiger
In 2005, the Malayan Tiger became the ninth sub-specie of tiger after an extensive DNA study of wild-caught and captive tigers from around the region as well as captive Indo-Chinese Tigers around the world. The Malayan Tiger is only found in Peninsula Malaysia and is sufficiently genetically different from the Indo-Chinese Tiger, which it was grouped with previously. The Malayan Tiger was given the scientific name Panthera tigris malayensis by Malaysian authorities but it is also referred to as P.t. jacksonii.
